Escape Academy captures the fun of escape puzzles, without the cramped rooms

My friends, it has been extremely difficult to naturally produce enough feel-good brain juice to function like a normal person. Even the things I enjoy so much, like video games, just don’t work like they used to. so much the reasons. But after spending time with escape academy by playing around a bit and talking with the devs, i think i have the serotonin delivery system i so badly needed.

escape academy by Coin Crew Games is a narrative puzzle game formatted to resemble real life escape rooms. You play as a guest escape room enthusiast in a secret academy where students can train to become the best escapee. The folks at Coin Crew games actually worked on actual in-person escape rooms and, during an episode of pandemic-induced cabin fever, went looking for games that recreated that experience. But, they haven’t quite found the kind of games that scratch that particular itch, so they decided to make their own back scratcher.

It can be difficult to transform something originally designed for a physical space into a digital one. There will always be a part that can’t really be accurately translated from real to unreal and it’s our brain’s job to suspend disbelief enough to bridge that gap. One of the most appealing things about escape academy is that it feels like an almost lossless translation of the escape room experience. I didn’t feel like I was missing out or being constrained by not being in a physical space. I remember feeling the same deeply throbbing anxiety glancing at the running timer from time to time as I walked through a towering room as I once had in real rooms with real people .

the ace lawyer series of puzzle games that I enjoyed the most, but one of my biggest pet peeves, especially the latest version, is that sometimes the solutions to questions or puzzles require huge leaps of logic. There’s a lot of A+B=D and you don’t know how the game designers got there.

One of my favorite puzzles in the demo.

But all the puzzles I’ve played escape academy made sense. They weren’t too easy but neither were they so convoluted that I couldn’t follow the logic of the game to arrive at the correct answer or figure out the next step in the puzzle chain as is often required in ace lawyer.

I like this kind of middle-of-the-road puzzle approach because it makes you feel like a brain god. Yes, I followed the clues neither too difficult nor too easy to correctly solve this puzzle. I am the Mind Queen, pay homage. That kind of cerebral jolt of good feelings is priceless and hard to come by, especially in a game design culture that seems thrilled to have the player character expresses what you need to do immediately when you sign up, something has to be done. (I look directly you Forbidden Horizon West.)

While escape academyThe designers trust the player’s intelligence enough to let them figure it out for themselves. There’s also a robust hint system that nudges players in the right direction without revealing any solutions. I was actually a little miffed because it’s very easy to accidentally press the “help me” button when I don’t need it, which affects my score.

I had never noticed the keyhole until now.

Another pet peeve about ace lawyer is that these games will require you to go through each step of solving a puzzle, even if you have already found the answer. It’s like knowing the answer to 3×2+3=9, the game will always ask me to multiply three by two and then add three again instead of just being able to answer nine. It’s slow and frustrating and sometimes, at least in ace lawyerthe game will take you even more superfluous steps to arrive at an answer that you have already found.

escape academy doesn’t care if you can show the work, it cares that you know the answer. In my game, there were puzzles that I simply hadn’t completed or clues that I could completely ignore because the game allowed me to skip to the answer. I enjoy this kind of frictionless “trust the player” puzzle solving.

I’m the type of person who knows she’s having fun when she starts mumbling to herself. I’m a ticker, I get extreme satisfaction from ticking metaphorical boxes, and I’ve recognized that talking to myself through the puzzles, “I have to transpose this card upside down.” A move up is a move down, a move left is right,” I was ticking boxes. These puzzles will absolutely require pen and paper and having the tactile feel of writing and crossing things out as you solve puzzles enhances the game’s already deeply satisfying gameplay loop.

Escape Academy also features intriguing storytelling in addition to puzzle solving.

Escape rooms, once the pride of malls and the cornerstone of any corporate retreat, have kind of fallen out of favor recently. They had a brief shining moment in their late teens before the pandemic made intimate gatherings in which people expelled a lot of breath shouting puzzle solutions at each other in cramped spaces an extremely little option. attractive. And even if such activities slowly return to the zeitgeist – for better or for worse – I don’t think the escape room game industry will return to its pre-pandemic glory. But the idea of escape rooms is still very appealing, which makes escape academy an early favorite for one of the most charming and timely entries in the 2022 games calendar.

escape academy releases June 28 on Xbox, Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation, and PC. But! If you are like me and need some good puzzles like escape academy and more right nowit will be available to try from today until May 23 as part of Steam Brain Puzzles Showcase.
