Diabetes drug taken once a week causes dramatic weight loss in obese people, newly published study finds The New England Journal of Medicine. The study authors said participants in the 72-week trial lost up to 20% of their body weight.

“The results indicate that tirzepatide may be a potential treatment option for people with obesity, with participants losing between 16% and 22.5% of their baseline weight,” the study authors said.

The drug, tirzepatide, is a new drug recently approved by the Food & Drug Administration to help treat type 2 diabetes with a weekly injection. The drug acts on two hormones that help control blood sugar and send satiety signals to the brain, explain the authors in the study. The researchers decided to examine the diabetes drug’s effect on obesity and presented the results of the Phase 3 trial at a symposium at the 82nd Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association® (ADA ) in New Orleans, LA.

The 72-week Phase 3 double-blind randomized controlled trial involved more than 2,500 participants considered obese and non-diabetic.

The research team divided the participants into four groups. Three of the groups received 5 mg, 10 mg, or 15 mg of tirzepatide to be self-administered once a week for 72 weeks, while the fourth group received a self-administered placebo injection. All four groups received counseling sessions regarding low-calorie lifestyles and meals. They also performed at least 150 minutes of physical activity per week.

Investigators found that 89% of participants, who took the 5mg dose of the drug and 96% of those who took weekly doses of 10mg and 15mg of the drug, achieved at least 5% reduction in body weight compared to 28% of those in the placebo group.

According to the report, participants who took the 5mg dose of tirzepatide lost an average of 35 pounds and the 10mg group achieved an average loss of 49 pounds. Participants who took the 15mg injection saw an average weight loss of 52 pounds over the 72 weeks of the study. According to the study, people in the placebo group achieved an average weight loss of 5 pounds.

Obesity should be treated like any other chronic disease – with effective and safe approaches that target the underlying mechanisms of disease, and these results highlight that tirzepatide could do just that,” said lead researcher Ania Jastreboff, MD, PhD, associate professor in the medical school of Yale University and Director of Weight and Obesity Management. Prevention at the Yale Stress Center told a news outlet.

“These results are an important step forward in potentially expanding effective treatment options for people with obesity. Notably, approximately 9 out of 10 obese people lost weight while taking tirzepatide,” Jastreboff, who is also co-director of the Yale Center for Weight Management in Connecticut, said in the media report.
