USMNT vs Granada score, grades: Jesus Ferreira scores four as USA cruise to easy win

The United States men’s national team kicked off their Concacaf Nations League title defense with an easy one-sided 5-0 win over visiting Grenada on Friday night. Jesus Ferreira, who is looking to be the USMNT’s starting striker at the 2022 World Cup, tied a team record with four goals to help his case, albeit against poor opposition.

The reds, whites and blues, playing their last match on American soil this calendar year, outscored the visitors 25-3 in a game that at times felt more like a scrum than an official competition for Gregg Berhalter’s side.

Surprisingly, it took the United States 43 minutes to score despite dominating the ball and chances, with an attentive Ferreira finishing from inside the box.

With so many misses in front of goal lately, Ferreira managed to reverse that poor form with a prolific game which, while a great stat sheet for him, came against a team ranked 170th in the world. He is the fifth player to score four goals in a match for the United States, after Archie Stark (1925), Aldo Donelli (1934), Joe-Max Moore (1993) and Landon Donovan (2003).

With key players like Christian Pulisic and Tyler Adams out, USA were able to dictate the pace of play all night. The visitors never came close to scoring, registering a 0.10 xG on three shots. USA finished with an xG of 4.08 on their 25 shots. The Americans also had 66.6% possession, didn’t concede a corner and saw Matt Turner not having to make a single save on goal.

The defending champions extended their home unbeaten streak to 26 games, equaling the previous record set from 2013 to 2015.

The Americans now turn their attention to what should be a much tougher test on Tuesday when they face El Salvador on Day 2.

The United States will play the World Cup in November after failing to qualify for the 2018 edition. The USMNT will face Wales on November 21, England on November 25 (the day after Thanksgiving) and Iran November 29.

USMNT Player Ratings

(GK) Matt Turner

90 Wasn’t tested at all as the Grenade took three shots putting zero on target. One of the easiest matches he will have with the national team shirt.

seven

(DEF) Antonee Robinson

60 Only created a chance, but that won’t matter because the clean sheet is what’s most important. It’s been good to see that Robinson can be more conservative, only bombing forward when necessary.

seven

(DEF) Aaron Long

45 I didn’t need to do much with Carter-Vickers being the most dominant defender of the night. A fine performance in the first half but was later pulled as Berhalter continues to test his central pairings.

seven

(DEF) Cameron Carter-Vickers

90 Kept the game ahead of him, making five interceptions during the game and winning most of his dogfights. While not one of the toughest defensive challenges he will face, it was a good improvement to see from Carter-Vickers after he made his move to Celtic official earlier today. 8

(DEF) Cannon Reggie

90 Stepped up nicely, picking up three interceptions as it looks like Cannon is leading the way to the World Cup. With its versatility, it’s good to have on hand for any situation. seven

(MID) Kellyn Acosta

90 Controlled play from midfield. Acosta was everywhere during the match, helping the USA beat Grenada until the ball hit the back of the net. On a day when many midfield regulars were resting, Acosta shone. 9

(MID)Luca de la Torre

71 Was it a coming out party for de la Torre? Even without the assist, he had a great game helping control possession and pick up the pace against the Spice Boys. It will be important for de la Torre to be as dominant against stronger sides, but it’s good to see the ability is there. 8

(MID) Weston McKennie

45 Wasn’t in the game when the goals really started to come in but played a big part in wearing down Granada, creating two chances and ensuring the team kept possession in the first half. seven

(AV) Jordan Morris

60 A big chance was created and missed a few good attacking chances. When the USMNT turned the game into target practice, Morris didn’t keep up with the other team members, which could cost him dearly when minutes are limited. 6

(AV) Paul Arriola

90 Created a team of three chances, including one ending with a goal for FC Dallas teammate Ferreira. Arriola had a good shift during the game doing all the right things on the offensive and defensive side. seven

(AV) Jesus Ferreira

90 What a way to break a scoring drought. Ferreira scored four goals as he was in the right place at the right time almost the whole game to show what he does well for the national team. Although it’s hard to get too much out of the game due to the quality of the opposition, Ferreira couldn’t have done much more. ten

George Bello

Robinson, (’60) Did what was asked for in minutes but didn’t do anything too spectacular 6
Walker Zimmermann Long, (’45) Calm as always, Zimmerman turned things around defensively after entering the game. He didn’t win any of his headers but had two clearances and an interception once he got in. seven
Brenden Aaronson of the Tower, (’71) He didn’t need much time to make his mark in the game by creating an assist with his only created chance. A strong sub where Aaronson’s cool legs really helped break the Grenada. 8
Malik Tilman McKennie, (’45) Officially linked with the United States, Tillman stepped into a deeper midfield, he put in a solid performance that showed what he can offer down the line, but also shows how raw he is at the same time . There’s nothing to worry about at this point because with Polish he could be a strength. seven

Christian Rollan

Morris, (’60) Kept possession in slow motion once the game was already won. 6
Gregg Berhalter 5 Although he didn’t match all he needed in the Nations League opener, it was an emphatic victory that will hopefully restore Ferreira’s confidence after scoring four goals. It was a solid performance as the team did exactly what was asked of them and scored five goals, proving the game plan was correct. 9
