Although it’s hard to believe, it’s been five years since Forza Motorsport 7 spear. What was once a bi-annual sim racing franchise comes out with the open world Forza Horizon games slowed its release, presumably so developer Turn 10 Studios could rebuild its Gran Turismo competitor from scratch. The result is the new Forza Motorsport – no number – and it’s coming in the spring of 2023.

Dan Greenawalt, CEO of Sports car franchise, called this reboot “the most technically advanced racing game ever made”, thanks to features like real-time ray tracing during gameplay for detailed reflections, fully variable time of day and weather simulation for every track and a “completely revised” ride. dynamic. Chris Esaki, the game’s creative director, called the game “a 48x improvement in the fidelity of our physics simulation” – vague as we don’t yet know precisely what aspects of handling have been improved. We hope to have more information next Thursday during the next monthly Forza stream.

What is clear is that Maple Valley, a place that dates back to the very first Forza Motorsport on the original Xbox, has been completely rebuilt with new backgrounds. The result is magnificent, with a Forza Horizon 5-esque attention to capturing textures and surfaces with photogrammetry for a jump in depth and detail.

On the racing side, for a long time Forza fans will appreciate that the simulation of fuel consumption, as well as the wear of the various tire compounds, has finally been taken into account. The asphalt “rubbers” during a session too, a phenomenon that Gran Turismo 7 don’t try to reply. These aspects, along with the new dynamic environments, should bring an element of strategy to longer races that the series has historically lacked. From turn 10 announcement:

A fundamental part of Forza Motorsport is our fully dynamic time of day system, which brings tracks to life in stunning detail and, like the weather, will be available across all tracks. Changes in the time of day alter ambient temperatures, which, in turn, impacts track surface temperatures. These changes in track temperature will affect your car’s grip, as will rubber and weather. These new simulation details add depth, drama and dynamics to the racing experience.

Damage received love too, which is refreshing because it’s an aspect of racing that most racing developers tend to ignore these days. Esaki’s words here are tinged with hyperbole – claims of destruction “reproduced down to individual scratches on the bodywork” barely ring any bells and whistles for those of us who remember how to brush up against a barrier in the original. Forza Motorsport would have leave traces of your car’s paint behind on the concrete. In the demo, we see a completely crumpled and scraped Audi R8 GT3 on an off-road excursion around Maple Valley’s infamous last corner, but, crucially, all of its parts are still attached.

However, Forza Motorsport looks impressive at this point and will probably only get more amazing when it launches next year. In this slice of gameplay and the trailer shown during the Xbox and Bethesda event on Sunday, Turn 10 teased Laguna Seca, Spa Francorchamps, and Kyalami of South Africa, of all locations, featured in the game. Kyalami is a particularly inspired choice, as it tends to miss many racing titles. A fictional track set in Japan, called Circuit Hakone, will also debut.

Meanwhile, IMSA’s Acura and Cadillac DPi prototypes, 1966 Chapparal 2E and 1977 Honda RA300 stood out among the more surprising highlights of the list of cars featured in the trailer. This new iteration in the Sports car seems to focus on racing cars, although road cars are not left out. You can check out the full list of cars seen in the in-game images official site.

Microsoft was unclear on Sunday whether Forza Motorsport will be another intergenerational version, like Forza Horizon 5, or whether it will be exclusive to current-gen Xbox Series X, S, and PC. Personally, I’d like to see Turn 10 leave behind outdated hardware and take full advantage of what today’s consoles have to offer, although a closed beta of the game last year was supposed to work on Xbox One. We’ve contacted Microsoft to find out if this version has been removed, although it’s entirely possible the company hasn’t made a final decision yet.
